If you’ve been following this entrepreneurship series, you’ve probably noticed a common theme: building a successful business requires much more than understanding finance, operations management, or marketing. One of the most overlooked entrepreneurial skills is storytelling.

That may sound surprising. After all, when most people think about startups, they think about products, investors, websites, and sales. What they don’t always think about is the story behind the business.

The reality is that social media has changed entrepreneurship forever. People no longer simply buy products. They buy into journeys. They follow founders. They celebrate milestones. They become invested in watching businesses grow in real time.

In many ways, entrepreneurship today is part business strategy and part storytelling.

Think about some of the most successful modern brands. Their audiences don’t just know what they sell. They know why the company exists, what problems the company is trying to solve, and how the founder arrived at the idea. Customers feel connected to the mission because they have been invited into the story.

However, effective storytelling requires balance. A great storyteller knows how to keep an audience engaged without revealing every detail. Startups should share progress, lessons learned, successes, and challenges, but they should also maintain enough mystery and anticipation to keep followers returning for the next chapter.

This is one of the reasons I continue to advocate for the arts and humanities. Storytelling, communication, literature, history, and creative writing teach us how to connect information with meaning. Those skills become invaluable in business, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

Too often we treat entrepreneurship as though it belongs exclusively to business majors. In reality, some of the strongest entrepreneurs combine expertise from multiple disciplines. They understand business fundamentals while also possessing communication skills, creativity, and emotional intelligence.

As someone who has spent more than a decade working in consulting, leadership, data analytics, and academic research, I have found that storytelling is equally important when working with data. Data alone rarely inspires action. Stories help people understand why the data matters.

This is what is often referred to as storytelling with data. Rather than presenting a collection of charts and spreadsheets, effective leaders explain the meaning behind the numbers. They help audiences understand trends, risks, opportunities, and outcomes through clear and compelling narratives.

Ways to Improve Your Storytelling Skills

• Read broadly, especially books, biographies, and case studies.
• Study effective public speakers and presenters.
• Practice writing blogs, newsletters, and social media content.
• Learn the basics of creative writing.
• Keep a journal documenting your entrepreneurial journey.
• Learn data visualization techniques.
• Practice translating technical information into plain language.
• Study marketing and branding campaigns.
• Create video content and tell stories through multiple media formats.
• Seek feedback from mentors, clients, and customers.
